Where to Search for an Example of a Dissertation
It is easy to find a working sample of a dissertation today. And a working example of a dissertation can be a very good way to gain a perspective of the scope of your own project—as long as you do not copy any of it or become overly dependent on your example dissertation. The strongest reason is that the reason that dissertations are submitted both in print and electronic form is so that they can be uploaded to a dissertations database, making them detectable by all plagiarism detectors. Make sure if you “borrow” anything you make it original in wording.
First, Check The Dissertation Stacks
First, for mere formatting’s sake, find the most recent dissertation you can that has been bound in your specific library and in your major. As long as the dissertation formatting guidelines have stayed the same between this and last year, you can use this for formatting elements such as your title page, table of contents, page numbering, chapter pages and other elements with strict formatting rules.
While you’re in the stacks, check and see if anyone’s written on your topic in the past five years. If nothing else, you can run off a copy of their works cited and see what research ideas you can borrow.
Finding Dissertations Online
Today’s students, of course, are gifted with the amount of dissertation guidance they can find online. I would expose myself with as many dissertations, and ones from the better universities, on my topic or the subject I am writing about and begin perusing these two or three months before you begin writing.
You can also search Google for dissertations which proud students have put online to showcase their accomplishments.
Use Dissertations on Your Topic to Enlarge Your Research Collection
Also, remember this—there is no better way to lengthen your works cited and to expose yourself to more research on your very topic than to view dissertations on your topic written by other students. Each dissertation writer has a dissertation committee which will all suggest different types of sources you can tie into your book length project. Take advantage of their hard work to expand upon your research. Remember—a dissertation is merely your words weaving a ton of quotes, paraphrases, and, possibly, graphs and tables. Once you realize this and get on with the research, the whole project will go smoother. And when you don’t feel like writing, work on formatting elements instead. There’s always something to do.
