How to Compose Dissertation Acknowledgements in a Proper Way
If the process of actually writing your dissertation wasn’t enough, someone thought it would be a great idea to add an acknowledgement section to the dissertation. The acknowledgement section is exactly what it sounds like. It is a section of your paper where you will acknowledge those that have helped you with your paper. It will be the section where you give them credit for their assistance. Sounds easy right? Wrong. You can get yourself in really big trouble if you leave an important contributor out.
Not only do you have to make sure that you include those that helped you, there are board members who will be judging the success of your dissertation that you may want to acknowledge as well. This may not help your dissertation get pushed through but if you don’t do it, it may help it get put down. It shouldn’t be about politics but what in this life isn’t about politics at the end of the day?
Dedication Section
It is probably a good idea to make your acknowledgements in a dedication section. That way you can talk about those individuals that pushed you towards your degree over the years while you are also thanking the member of the board that are going to decide on your paper.
There are many people who have contributed to the production of your dissertation. You owe your gratitude to all of the people that made the dissertation possible. The acknowledgement for each person should contain three pieces.
- Name: The acknowledgement should list the person’s name. This is rather obvious.
- Position: The next is to list their position to you. This is how you know them. They could be your advisor, mentor, teacher, etc.
- Reason: You should then spend a little time explaining what they have done for you. This would be the reason that you decided to acknowledge them in the first place. This is where you would say something nice about them and how they helped you complete your dissertation.
The acknowledgement section is an important part of your dissertation. You may be the only one who will officially get credit for the research but you should give some credit to the individuals that helped you write it. This is a wonderful gesture and should be taken seriously. It is essential to give credit to the people that helped you along the way.
