Useful Things To Know About Creating a PhD Thesis
Writing a thesis can very well be the longest project you’ll ever do, and take the most work. If this is your first time writing one, you won’t realize how much it will require from you until you’re eyeball deep in your research. Although it certainly isn’t something to slap together without a thought, a thesis doesn’t have to be as difficult as you make it out to be. It’s similar to writing an essay or research paper, only on a larger scope and with a more serious topic. That being said, there are a few things you should be aware of while writing your thesis. Here are a few important tips:
- Take your time in choosing a topic. It’s arguably the most important decision you’ll make during the entire thesis writing process.
- When you go to start your research, make sure you have things organized. If you don’t have a list of each book you’ve read, each website you checked out – whether it was useful or not – you’re going to find yourself struggling to keep up and wasting time looking for things you shouldn’t have lost in the first place
- Make an outline. This is so important! You need to have a solid idea of what each chapter is going to be about, what you want there as far as quotes and other sources, and how everything will tie back to your original topic
- As for the writing of your thesis, do it as fast as you can. Your first draft will be rough no matter how much time you spend on it, and in fact it’s much better in the long run to have a hastily written first draft.
- After you’ve done that, it’s time to put your masterpiece away for a while. I know, it might sound counterproductive, but distancing yourself from it for as long as you can, at least a week, will give you the indispensable benefit of being able to reread it with a fresh perspective
- Now when it finally comes time to edit, you can come back to your thesis and correct things without feeling hurt that your writing wasn’t that good. Have other people read it and give you their opinions, and take their advice to heart. Time will only make your thesis better at this point, for more time away from it as well as more time spent on edits.
