Writing a Dissertation is a Completely New Experience
When the time comes to take your writing work up to another level, the word “dissertation” or “thesis” can pose as quite the fright of a word! Whether it is for a new level in school, a new job, a new group of study, or even for pleasure, updating your style of writing is a brilliant rite of passage for any hopeful or aspiring writer! There are a lot of factors, rules, guidelines, and changes that go into professional or intellectually, academic writing, and when beginning, it can often be confusing as to where to start. However, an easy way to beginning is to tackle the dissertation.
The first thing you have to do when beginning to write a dissertation is to analyze the topic of your piece of writing. The dissertation is used in the introductory paragraph to give the reader the knowledge of what your paper is about and why they should continue reading it. The only way to properly do this is to understand exactly what you are writing about and why you are writing it. Is your paper’s purpose to inform the reader? To persuade the reader? To delight the reader? Once you understand the actions (or the hopeful actions) of your paper, it is easier to write a thesis statement pushing the article forwards.
Once you figure out why you are writing your paper, you have to think about the topic you are writing about. If you are writing your paper under the topic of cognitive psychology and you are writing your paper to inform the reader- what is the ultimate point you are trying to inform the reader about. An example of a correct thesis statement based on that information would be something along the lines of including “to inform the reader of the relationship of the science of cognitive psychology and the behaviors of the mind”. Obviously you want to use a little bit of variation, but that is a general idea of how the dissertation differs from any normal introductory paragraph you have written in the past.
Another key point in a successful dissertation is to always refer back to your statement in your conclusion paragraph. If you can, try and rephrase it in a new way that draws connections to the points in your paper and the statement that you have written. The thesis statement serves as a string that ties the entire paper together, both at the beginning and at the end to give you an exceptional piece of writing.
