How to write your dissertation: 15 helpful tips
- Decide when you will start.
- Make a working plan and set achievable targets for your regular work.
- Reward milestones when you reach them.
- Write every day. This is serious. The only way you will get through this process is to write every day for at least forty five minutes. By setting aside time to work every day you can achieve small goals regularly and get that much closer to finishing the final product.
- Leave your computer off until you know you will use it. This will help to eliminate distractions as you are reading.
- Fight off distractions. Make sure you have a semi-isolated and quiet place in which to write. You want to alleviate any distractions which might keep you from your ultimate goal.
- Use a stop watch or alarm to ensure you meet your regular writing goals and then take breaks in between.
- If you can, turn off your cell phone and stop checking your email while you write. Leave all browser tabs unrelated to your paper closed and don’t open any documents save for those related to your work.
- Get support. You need to be accountable to someone during this process so that you don’t fall behind.
- Writing groups make for a great resource when you are writing your dissertation. You will be shocked at what meeting with others can really do for you.
- Keep going. No matter what, each little bit of effort you put out will place you that much closer to the final goal, so just keep going.
- Stay organized. You need to make sure you have gathered all the materials related to your studies and weed out anything that will not be included in your final product.
- Catalogue your references beforehand. There are many programs that help to facilitate the organization of your references. These tools are imperative to success writing your dissertation. They can help you readily insert a reference while you write and will automatically format the reference to your thesis using whatever format is required for your paper.
- Create a workplace. You will need to find a place where you know that you can write in a productive manner. Some people need a place that is not their home or office. Others need someplace with minimal distractions. Find whatever you need and turn that place into your workplace. Continue using the same workplace throughout the writing process.
- Take care of yourself. You won’t get anywhere if you fail to eat or sleep or shower. So take care.
