Writing a PhD dissertation for dummies
If you are new to PhD research then you need to know some basic details of it. PhD Dissertation is a lengthy process which can be best fulfilled if a plan is already designed. A good dissertation is constructed while you are working on it, so it is best when it contains some flexibility. But remember, flexibility shouldn’t be confused with goal of the study. It means that you put place for new or unexpected findings so that you may be able to get along with them.
What kind of plan?
There can be two types of planning in research design, linear and conceptual. Linear plan consists simply of the steps which are followed in research. It follows a basic outline which can differ according to your model or how your supervisor sees it the best. It consists usually of the following outline:
- Introduction to the study
- Rationale
- Literature review
- Theoretical grounds of research
- Research Method
- Findings and conclusion (Discussion)
- Suggestions for future research on the topic (if someone wants to proceed the research in the same area or the same topic)
- Appendices and bibliography
A detailed and relevant introduction to the topic of your research is given in this section. It also includes stating the problem of your research.
For what purpose are you conducting this research? It is a very important aspect of the research. Why did you choose this topic is what marks the contribution of your research.
A review of the related research on your topic is most important. It gives strength to your thesis and also plenty of knowledge and grasp on your research plan.
These were the basic parts of any thesis. Next parts may vary thesis to thesis depending on the topic and most importantly, style of the researcher.
What are the grounds of your research? It includes theory which supports your research and explaining how it relates to it.
This section consists of approach and methodology that is used in dissertation which solely depends upon the area and type of your research.
Again, depending on your style you choose how to present the results. Some present it with discussion on results along with it. Some do it separately
Do provide the sources through which you got the information and knowledge of you topic.
Concept Map means visual representation of your research plan. It is also called mind map which means that you are putting the plan of research in your mind on paper. It doesn’t mean that you can get rid of writing a long research dissertation just by describing it through concept map. You still need to write it in detail and describe every single aspect of your research. A major advantage of using concept map is that it can help you modify your plan.
